It’s not an easy task to find the right recruiter to work with. There are so many companies and individuals in the recruiting industry, it can get overwhelming and confusing when trying to decide who to work with on your critical job openings. Sometimes, you may even decide to work with several recruiters at one time because they all are saying they can do the job for you. This choice isn’t necessarily the best route to take, you can see why in a previous post I wrote 4 Reasons why using multiple recruiters could hurt your business.
If you are considering using a recruiter to help you find your next star employee, you are going to pay a large sum of money (fee) for their services. Choosing a recruiter to work with is no different than purchasing any other product or service. You want to learn more about that product or service before purchasing it.
So how can you decide which recruiters you should work with? Here are 5 questions you should ask a recruiter before deciding on working with them or not.
- Specifically, what will you do to fill this particular role? Find out what their process is when they are recruiting. Are they just pulling resumes off of job boards, which your admin can do for you? Are they posting ad’s in places you can post ad’s?
- What sources do you use when looking for candidates? Get an idea of what resources they use when looking for candidates. Are they going to scour job boards that you have already invested in?
- How many people do you cold call and how deep in your search will you go? This is a good question because honestly, there are not a lot of recruiters out there that will cold call into your competitors and dive into deep searching.
- How many positions do you work on at one time? This is an important question. Recruiters sometimes work on 15 to 20 positions at one time, I know because I used to do that before I became self employed. How much focus is really going to be given to your opening and how much time are they really going to spend on finding the right person for you?
- How do you prioritize which jobs you focus on? This question will put them on the spot because they need to make sure they are conveying to you that your position will be the only one they focus on. You’ll be able to tell the difference between the honest answers vs. the fluff answers by how flustered they get when trying to respond to this question.
Finding and hiring the right person is a serious and very important task to a company. Recruiters represent your company and if you’re giving your openings to just anyone to fill them, it will be a reflection on who you are as a company.
