More than ever, single women are living full and happy lives. Living alone means calling your own shots, enjoying your own space and having the freedom to focus on yourself. While so many women embrace the perks of living alone there are still an unfortunate number of criminals who female-headed households every day. So, how can a woman be the queen of her castle, but ensure her own safety at the same time?
Install a home security system
Gone are the days when home security systems were too expensive for the average homeowner. And gone are the days where a woman living in an apartment was prohibited from installing such a system because of strict rental rules. Today, many burglar alarms, CCTV cameras and motion-detection devices are quite affordable. Using smarthome technology a plethora of devices exist, which can be controlled with a smartphone or other handheld device. These can even be installed over a DIY weekend without need of inviting an installer (i.e. stranger) into the home.
Adopt a dog
A dog should never be a sole home security measure as there are too many ways for such an approach to fail. For example, when you’re walking the dog, who’s protecting your home? And we don’t even want to discuss all of the horror stories about dogs who’ve been harmed by criminals during a break-in. However, as a layer of security, a dog can be an excellent companion, protector and alert system for women living alone. Find a list of dog breeds that are perfect for apartment dwellers, so every woman can benefit from this tip whether she owns or rents.
Invest in personal protection products
Avoiding the debate about whether to arm yourself with a gun or not, all women should own personal protection devices. Pepper spray, taser guns, personal alarm systems — all are worthwhile investments for everyone…especially women who live alone. Just be sure to check the laws in your state AND your local jurisdiction about the legalities of whichever product you select.
Change your locks
Did you change your locks before moving into your place? Are your locks able to be bumped or picked? Have you ever lost your keys? How many people have keys to your place (if you didn’t change your locks before moving in, you likely have no idea!)? To strengthen security at your home, change your locks to a brand that cannot be bumped with a special key or one that cannot be breached otherwise. Did you know that new technology has made it possible to use your fingerprint to lock and unlock your door? Or that you can employ a special code on a smartlock? These new-fangled locks aren’t that expensive, but offer you security that is unmatched by most others. Look into the solution that’s right for you, but please DO change your locks right away.
Learn how to defend yourself
Learn to hit like a girl…like Rhonda Rousey or Laila Ali, to be exact. Seriously, how long are we going to allow ourselves to be attacked before we start raising our daughters to defend themselves? Krav Maga is but one example of a fighting style that can be learned by women and used effectively against an assailant regardless of his height or strength. Self-defense and martial arts classes are available in most areas and are also a great way to get in shape so that you have the strength and stamina to fight off an attacker when needed.
