Every woman wants her hair to be healthy and look great but common hair care mistakes can do your hair more harm than good. From skipping the conditioner to using the wrong brush, these small mistakes can leave your locks limp and lame. Try some of these quick fixes to rejuvenate hair and bring it back to life. Having good hair habits can be the difference between making and breaking your hair – literally.
Shampooing your hair too often
Shampooing can strip hair of its essential oils leaving hair vulnerable to damage. Unless you have very oily hair, skip a day or two in between washes. On the days you don’t shampoo with water, use a dry-shampoo spray and comb through hair gently. This will remove dirt, oil and odor from hair and leave hair soft, shiny, and fresh until the next wash.
Not using a sulfate-free shampoo on color-treated hair
A lot of shampoos are marked for use on color-treated hair but the truth is that only sulfate-free shampoos are safe on hair that has been processed. Sulfates are harsh detergents that are used in most shampoos. These detergents can strip hair of its natural oils which are essential to keeping hair healthy and extending the life of hair color. Replacing your normal shampoo with one that is sulfate-free can be a simple way to protect color and prevent dryness and split ends.
Using the wrong brush for your hair type
Hair brushes made from boar bristles are generally a safe choice for any hair type. Unlike plastic or metal bristles, boar bristles are less likely to damage hair while brushing. If your hair is tangle-prone, curly or super-thick, avoid round brushes and stick with a vented brush. If your hair is long a paddle-style brush will leave hair sleek and straight or you can use a large barrel round brush to add some volume to your hair. If you have short hair use a vented brush to add volume or a small barrel round brush to add some curls. Using the proper hair brush can make styling hair easy and quick and prevent damage.
Not protecting hair from heat styling
Heat styling can wreak havoc on your hair, especially if you are doing so without protection. Spritz on a heat-styling spray before blow drying, curling, or flat ironing. The spray will protect hair from burning and most of them contain extra conditioners and shine-enhancers to keep hair looking fabulous all day long. Plus, using a heat styling spray prior to styling will help the process go smoother by allowing the styling tools to glide easier over the hair.
Skipping the conditioner
All too often I hear women say that they don’t need conditioner because their hair doesn’t get tangles. De-tangling the hair is just the beginning of a long list of benefits that come along with conditioning the hair regularly. Conditioning hair after each washing can keep hair healthy, shiny, and free of split ends. If your hair is dry or damaged, use a leave-in conditioning spray daily to protect hair from further damage. You can also use a deep conditioner once a week to keep hair hydrated and healthy.
