This weekend isn’t just Halloween; it’s also 2050 Daytona Beach, a fresh pop culture convention taking place in Florida from Oct. 30 to Nov. 1. One of the many celebrities who will be in attendance is Farscape star Gigi Edgley, who joined LA Fan Cultures Examiner last week to discuss why she loves attending conventions so much and what she’s looking forward to this weekend.
American audiences know Gigi from her role as Chiana on Farscape and as the host of Jim Henson’s Creature Shop Challenge, but the Australian actress has worked across a variety of genres in her career, including major roles in Stingers, The Secret Life of Us and The Starter Wife. Currently, she’s attached to Nexus, a science fiction short film in the process of crowdfunding that you can find more about here, and will be joining the cast of Star Trek Continues as well.
It’s that balance between passion projects and major gigs that brought Gigi to Los Angeles originally, and that makes attending conventions so rewarding for her. “I’ve been working on my crowdfunding projects, which has actually saved my life. It’s a whole new wave, I’ve got a whole new energy within my career,” she told us. “I’m absolutely loving it. I love working for the bigwigs and the big studios and everything, but in between those auditions I need to keep making beautiful projects or else I’ll go insane.
“So these comic conventions are perfect for me,” she continued, “because I get to meet all the people that have supported me and looked after me and fed me, clothed me, for how many years, and I also get to promote these amazing new projects that I’ve been working on. Truly they are just that.
“I first moved over here eight years ago and I had come to a really happy place with my career in Australia, and I wasn’t finding that job that made my heart soar,” Gigi explained. “So I went you know what, I’m going to try it. I’m going to give it a go. I knew no one and everyone was saying I’m crazy, why would you ever go there? And I was like life is too short to not be chasing your dreams, what makes your heart completely happy.”
For her, that means getting to work on all kinds of different material and also getting to interact with the fans that make those projects possible, as she’ll be doing this weekend at 2050 Daytona. The added bonus is that the convention takes place over Halloween, so she also gets to celebrate the holiday at the same time. Did she have any particular plans because it’ll be Halloween?
“I want to be Tinker Bell!” she laughed. “A couple of my friends are coming to the convention and they were going to be Ghostbusters and I was like well if you’re going to be Ghostbusters, I totally want to be Slimer. But we were having such a hard time finding costumes because people are very protective of their Ghostbusters outfits. Hopefully I can make an appearance as Slimer, but who knows.”
Perhaps the best part of conventioneering is that she gets to share the entirety of her experience with an audience. “It’s all about drama and comedy in Australia…and America only knows me as an alien in sci-fi land and a chick running through space with guns and stuff,” she told us. “It’s kind of cool because I get to show [the fans] different things and other stuff that we’ve been working on.
“The last thing that we did was actually called Hashtag, and that was a little Kickstarter,” she continued. “Our goal was $40,000, and we made over $44,000 in the end. We’re going to take it to Sundance and Cannes and Toronto and eventually we’re going to make something more amazing out of it. It’s been really great.
“I’m just working non-stop. I write music, I do comic books, I do short films, music videos, anything that I can do to keep my energy channeled into making new, interesting stories,” Gigi said. “Something I can give back to the fans, because I’m not good at sitting still.” But she is great witj the fans, and her appearance will no doubt be one of the highlights of 2050 Daytona Beach.
