Ford has announced their intentions of resurrecting the Ranger nameplate in 2018 pending an agreement with the United Auto Workers Union (UAW). According to an article published Saturday, Ford is looking at the possibility of jumping head first with the new Ranger into several markets worldwide.
The agreement with UAW, according to an article, will create or retain 8,500 jobs. The 2018 Ranger will share it’s chassis with the 2020 Ford Bronco which will be produced alongside each other at Ford’s Michigan plant. As a result of these decisions, the plant, which currently produces the Focus and C-Max, will move it’s production efforts for those vehicles elsewhere to focus production on the Ranger and Bronco, according to an article. The larger vehicles will be in high demand as the SUV and truck segments explode with large sales figures.
Sales for Ford’s full-size pickup, the F-150, has cited sales figures of 1.2 million this year. These numbers are so high that Ford has had to contact extra builders for F-150 trucks to keep product on the sales floor as buyers snatch them up quickly.
Sales for smaller pickups like the Chevy Canyon and Colorado are smaller than F-150 sales but still significant, according to an article. The midsize pickups have experienced sales figures of around 10% of the F-150, or about 120,000 this year. Although much lower than the F-150 in volume, the market is there for the Ranger to earn plenty of profit for Ford.
These sales have increased as the demand for trucks grows as the year goes on. It was estimated earlier this year that Chevy’s smaller trucks would only go at a rate of 82,000 units this year.
GM is planning an annual production of 130,000 units at their Missouri plant, which is responsible for production of the Canyon and Colorado. As fuel prices continue to decrease, more an more people are considering getting into the truck market to enjoy added space for little added fuel cost per month.
In conjunction with the Bronco, Ford is poised to resurrect two iconic models back into the market which could very well skyrocket profits and sales.
