Dodge opened the order desk this week for, what they say, is the fastest street-legal Viper track car ever offered. Based on the information supplied during its recent introduction, the price announced – $117,895 – may well be the best value ever for this rebirth (absent since 2010) of the iconic American Club Racer model of the Viper.
The reborn 2016 Viper ACR was unveiled last week at the Conner Avenue Assembly Plant in Detroit and immediately drew both media and Viper enthusiast attention to this ACR fully track ready Viper with its ultimate handling, performance and road course capability.
The ACR Viper is hand-built at Conner Avenue and continues the legacy of ACR as the ultimate street-legal track car for club racing, says Dodge.
“Bringing our street-legal Dodge Viper ACR back is going to arm our track enthusiasts with the ultimate weapon to dominate road courses across the country,” said Tim Kuniskis, President and CEO — Dodge and SRT Brands, FCA — North America. “This is without a doubt the best Viper ACR ever. The latest in aerodynamic, braking and tire technology will ensure its legendary performance reputation around the world.”
The Viper ACR was originally introduced in 1999 and was last available for the 2010 model year. The new 2016 model continues its performance legacy with significant aerodynamic and suspension upgrades, new Carbon Ceramic brakes with six-piston calipers and high-performance tires specifically designed for ACR. Enthusiasts will find they need that handling package to properly manage and control the ACR with its hand-built 8.4-liter V-10 power plant that is rated at 645 horsepower and 600 lb.-ft. of torque – the most torque of any naturally aspirated sports-car engine in the world, according to Dodge.
Top speed for the 2016 Viper ACR is said to be 177 mph which is less than the Dodge SRT Viper at 204 m.p.h. But Dodge says that its superior handling characteristics and braking – augmented by the massive wing generating serious downforce, will make it the fastest car on a road track.
Specific equipment highlights include:
- ACR-exclusive Carbon Ceramic Matrix 15-inch two-piece rotors and six-piston front calipers brakes from Brembo
- Track suspension with 10-setting, double-adjustable, Bilstein coil-over racing shocks and unique race alignment delivering up to 3 inches of suspension height adjustment for fine-tuning corner weight
- Massive Kumho Ecsta V720 high-performance tires (295/25/19 front, 355/30/19 rear), designed and developed specifically for the 2016 Dodge Viper ACR, said to deliver laps times that are 1.5 seconds faster than off-road-only race tires
Inside the 2016 Viper ACR will feature a unique Alcantara hand-crafted interior with seating designed to assist driver stability under high G-loading – all accented by an iconic ‘ACR’ dash badge and stitching.
Other features of the interior designed for performance include lightweight carpet, minimal three speaker audio and manual adjusting seats to manage weight and maintain optimal 50/50 weight distribution.
Available a bit later will be an optional ACR Extreme Aero Package that will deliver nearly 1 ton of peak downforce at top speed through a massive adjustable dual-element carbon fiber rear wing, rear carbon fiber diffuser, unique SRT hood with removable louvers, detachable extension for the front splitter and additional dive planes. Pricing for this option was not made available.
Lastly, Dodge will offer ACR buyers a ‘1 of 1’ customization option for the ultimate personalized Viper track car if desired.
Production of the 2016 Dodge Viper ACR will begin in third quarter 2015 at the Conner Avenue Assembly Plant. Vehicles will start arriving in dealerships in the third quarter of 2015. The suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $117,895 does not include destination ($2,495) and gas guzzler tax ($2,100). Specifics on ordering and production run volumes were not provided.
Given the demand and resulting problems with the introduction of the Dodge Challenger and Charger Hellcat – do not get left out – you should contact your Dodge Viper dealer for more information right away.
