The Friends & Foundation of the Rochester Public Library (FFRPL) is now accepting entries for the the 2016 SOKOL HIGH SCHOOL LITERARY AWARDS contest for Monroe County student writers in grades 9 – 12. Entries are being accepted through January 29, 2016. Again this year, there are cash prizes for the best original student prose, poetry and performance.
Judging is by nationally-known authors and the winners will be announced in April 2016. Since 1958, the Friends & Foundation of the Rochester Public Library (RPL) has sponsored a creative writing contest for high school students in grades nine through twelve. In 1985, Mr. & Mrs. Eli and Mildred Sokol established an endowment, through the Rochester Area Community Foundation, that makes it possible for us to award monetary prizes to the winners and honoraria to the judges. WA special performance prize in addition to the traditional prose and poetry prizes is also being offered. Through the Sokols’ foresight and generosity, the Friends & Foundation of RPL is able to encourage and foster the talent of young writers for future generations.
POETRY and PROSE categories each have three awards:
• First Prize $300
• Second Prize $200
• Third Prize $100
A PERFORMANCE Prize of $300 will also be awarded.
FFRPL is pleased to partner with Drake Memorial Library of The College at Brockport to host the winning submissions of the 2015 Sokol High School Literary Awards Contest on Digital Commons at Brockport, an online, open access repository of scholarly and creative works.
