Triathletes will again be able to practice their open water swimming in Pleasant Prairie’s Lake Andrea through the summer. Under the new direction of the Aquatics department at the RecPlex, the program has a few changes from previous years, but continues to offer weekly open water swims and pre-race swims for the Pleasant Prairie Triathlon and the Iron Girl Pleasant Prairie Triathlon.
This year, the open water swims will primarily us a 1/3 mile triangular swim course, rather than a cross-lake swim. Tested in 2014, the triangle course offers participants the ability to swim multiple laps without stopping, or take a break on the beach and jump back in. Courses will alternate clockwise and counterclockwise, to allow practice with both left and right turns. Triangle course swims will start at the Lake Andrea Beach on the west side of the lake.
Gone in 2015, at least according to published information, is a rescue swimmer / triathlon coach who in past years swam at the back of the group to provide assistance and encouragement. Also, in 2014 registration for the Pleasant Prairie Triathlon included one free lake swim as part of the fee; that offer is not part of the race website this year.
Swims are held primarily on Thursday evenings at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday mornings at 7:00 a.m., and last one hour. There are additional Tuesday evening swims the week before the Pleasant Prairie Triathon on Sunday June 21, and before the Iron Girl Pleasant Prairie Triathlon on Sunday, August 9. On the two Saturdays immediately before each race there is an additional 11:00 a.m. swim. The full schedule of swim dates is available here.
In addition, the Tuesday June 16, Thursday June 18, and two Saturday June 20 swims will be done on the Pleasant Prairie Triathlon sprint course. These swims will start from the east side of Lake Andrea, by the RecPlex parking lot, which is the transition area during the race. Participants will enter the water from the small beach that serves as the race’s Swim In and Swim Out.
Swim schedule is subject to change and can be impacted by bad weather which closes the beach and the lake. Confirm beach closure and swim cancellations on the calendar at recplexonline.com.
Pricing for an open water swim is $10 for RecPlex members and $15 for non-members. Thursday or Saturday season passes are $90 RecPlex member, $100 non-member. An unlimited season pass for all open water swims is $170 for RecPlex members, $200 for non-members. Passes can be purchased at the RecPlex Guest Services desk.
Swims begin on Thursday, June 4 and run through Thursday, September 10. For more information, contact Aquatics & Competitive Swimming Director Kevin Milak at email@example.com or (262)947‐3630.
