Deep down stashed in any female’s closet are at least one pair of shorts in a coveted spot that they have held since high school. The clothes remain too nostalgic to throw away yet seem too “Gossip girl” to style for the present. The rare appearances they do make are out of pure necessity; most often laundry day.
There is no giving up in fashion, however. Countless trends have made comebacks and reappeared after a phenomenal number of rejections. Fashion is all about challenges. The same goes for personal style. Taking old pieces and re-purposing them for present day is where the majority of runway inspiration comes from. Just because shorts have not found their voice yet does not in any way mean a spot in your closet should open up just yet. Shorts can be incredibly versatile, comfortable and on trend. They just need to be styled correctly. Here are 10 ways to take your shorts out of the closet and get them ready for the catwalk.
When in doubt, go for the halter
One word: structure. Shorts + structure= sophistication. The halter is the best choice because it highlights the female figure versus a wider cut V or crew neck which is much more casual.
Stripes: the “now” pattern
Stripes are very in right now. If you are vying for a more casual, daytime look, spice it up with a pattern! Shorts on their own are a blank canvas and are a great way to experiment with new trends.
The open back
Although not often done, shorts can transition from day to night. A great way to play around with this idea is to try a top with an open back. Open backs can look very sophisticated and elegant; especially in the summer. To transition from a day at the beach to a dinner out, there are few options better than this one.
The “chambray trend” has been around for awhile. However (like shorts)! over the years it has been re-purposed and re-branded. From the prepsters to the hipsters everyone is on it because the options are endless. Try a two-tone wash like in the picture above or keep it classic with a light wash denim. Even go monochromatic with a matching tee/short combo.
A good high-waisted short is hard to find but it is an essential summer piece. The high-waisted trend expands the possibilities with the shorts in your closet. The most popular pairing right now is the crop top trend. Crop tops paired with a low-rise short can often look informal. Paired with a high-waisted, however the trend is very high fashion and elegant.
The coachella look
Since the California festival Coachella has been put on the map, so have the fashion trends that were spotted. The most popular is the peasant top and short combo (often paired with sunnies or a fedora). To transition the look for street style, the accessories remain optional. The peasant top in particular has increased in popularity. Paired with shorts the trend works on women of all ages and provides a formal elegance difficult to achieve in a short OOTD.
The graphic tee
The graphic tee and shorts combo remains one of the most difficult to style for present day. In high school it was the every day uniform. Bringing the trend forward without looking like it’s 2009 is not easy. The biggest change noted in the industry is the fit. Instead of accentuated, form fitting tees women are transitioning to looser, relaxed shirts and tucking them in creating a whole interpretation on the graphic tee trend.
Go preppy with a cardigan
Shorts are extremely versatile. Every fashion minority (and the fashion majorities) can style shorts so that their personality shines through. For those that have a preppy side, a cardigan is a great accent piece for shorts. It classes them up a bit and can act nicely as a transitional piece as the weather (hopefully) cools down.
Tank top and a flannel
A tank top paired with a flannel is good to try if you are looking for a more laid back, easygoing look. Stay simple with basics on top and bottom. For the flannel if you are feeling adventurous try something a bit more wild; go rainbow or try a brighter color palette. UrbanOutfitters has a nice selection of lightweight flannels that are the perfect summer accessory.
These matching crop top/short patterned sets are a fairly new trend. They are extremely high fashion and very on trend. Stick with a high-waisted short if you are going cropped. The patterns are fun to experiment with over the summer. They can also make great separates in the cooler seasons.
