In these warmer days, it is easy to over exert yourself with a bit too much exercise. Most of us will find ourselves outdoors more enjoying biking, hiking, cycling or swimming or perhaps doing a little more yard work than usual. If you find yourself with tight, sore or inflamed muscles one of the best remedies to relieve this condition is a relaxing massage. Adding several drops of essential oils from this list to your massage blend will help to heal the tight, sore muscles quicker and it will go deeper into the skin to heal the muscles. Also, if you routinely find yourself suffering from arthritis, some of these essential oils will work to relieve your pain and discomfort as well. If a massage blend feels like too much work, they can also be added to the bath along with Sea salts from the Dead Sea or Epsom salts which contain magnesium and other vitamins and minerals that also help restore the muscles. Grapefruit Essential oil
Grapefruit essential oil(citrus x paradise) is cold expressed from the peel of the grapefruit fruit. It is most commonly produced in Asia and California. It has a sweet, citrus fragrance that is uplifting. It helps to relieve fatigued muscles and also helps to tone the muscles and reduces cellulite. It is effective in energizing the body and mind. Like most citrus oils it is phototoxic, which means it should not be warren in direct sunlight.
Juniper essential Oil
Also known as Juniperus communis, Juniper essential oil is distilled from the berries and sometimes the branches of the Juniper evergreen tree. It is mainly produced in Scandinavia, Italy, France, Spain and Canada. It has a similar fragrance to pine, but with a warm peppery edge. It is a very effective oil for the body relieving muscle aches and pains, reducing uric acid build-up, helping to reduce cellulite as well as arthritis. However, it is best avoided during pregnancy.
Lavender Essential Oil
Also called: lavandula angustifolia, Lavender essential oil is made from the distillation of the purple flower tops of the Lavender herb/flower. It has a sweet, floral scent and is mainly produced in France, Spain and Bulgaria. The essential oil has many great uses including soothing muscle aches and pains and relieving inflamed tissues. It is also a great oil for skin care and massage in general.
Chamomile Essential Oil
There are two types of Chamomile essential oils, one is Roman Chamomile and the other is German Chamomile. The German Chamomile(Matricaria chamomilla) oil makes the best essential oil for relieving pain and inflammation from sore muscles. It is made from the distillation of the herbs flowers which has a dark blue colour. It has a sweet scent and is mainly produced in France.
Eucalyptus Essential Oil
Eucalyptus globulus or Eucalyptus essential oil is distilled from the leaves and mature branches of the Eucalyptus tree. The oil is mainly produced in Spain, Portugal and Brazil although it is native to Australia. The oil has a sweet, woody, camphor scent. It is know for relieving arthritis, muscular aches and pains, strains and helps improve one’s circulation.
Rosemary Essential Oil
Rosemary essential oil’s official name is: Rosmarinus officionalis and it is made by the distillation of the plants flowers and needle shaped leathery leaves. It has a fresh and uplifting fragrance and is mainly produced in Morocco, France and Spain. It is good for relieving swelling, sprains, aches and pains as well as rheumatoid and arthritis.
Peppermint Essential Oil
Peppermint essential oil which is also known as: Mentha piperita is distilled from the leaves and flowers of the peppermint plant. It is widely produced in Europe and America. The essential oil is refreshing, cool and uplifting. It helps with muscle aches and pains as well as by relieving stiff or tired muscles. It is best used in low concentration as it can irritate sensitive skin
Lemon Essential Oil
Also know as Citrus limon, lemon essential oil is made by the cold expression of the lemon peel. It is mainly produced in Israel, Italy and California. The oil is refreshing, citrus and sharp. It helps the body with rheumatoid, arthritis, cellulite, muscle aches and joint pain. It is overall, detoxifying for the body. But, like most citrus essential oils it is phototoxic, so caution should be taken when wearing this oil out into the sun. Also, use in moderation to avoid irritating the skin.
Pine Essential Oil
Pine essential oil is also known as Pinus sylvestris. The oil is distilled from pine needles of the pine tree and is mainly produced in North America and Northern Europe. It has a refreshing, woodsy, balsamic scent. It helps to relieve muscular aches and pains and also helps to improve circulation. It also helps remove built up uric acid in the body and it helps relieve rheumatism and arthritis.
Geranium Essential Oil
Geranium essential oil is also known as: Pelargonium graveolens. The oil is distilled from the leaves, stalks and flowers of the Geranium potted flower.
