Who are plus women, curvy women, real women and today’s women? They are your friends and neighbors, your family members and coworkers. They are in virtually every group of women we know, in every workplace in the country, and in every shopping mall we visit.
These terms for women have one thing in common: They all define women who are large and wear clothing that is larger than misses’ styles. Plus size clothing is available in almost every store and there are specialty stores that serve only larger women. Lane Bryant has, for many years, been a leader in fashionable apparel for big women. Cato has approximately half their store designated for plus size fashions. Full Beauty and J. Jill are among a growing number of online sites that offer amazing collections of clothing for women larger than size 12.
Terms such as curvy women, real women and today’s women have been adopted by stores and advertisers for women who wear plus size clothing. They may simply be more tactful term for the growing population of larger, heavier women.
There is no question that American women are getting bigger and bigger. According to Style Open, the average weight of American women in 2006 was 164.7 pounds This figure is increasing every year, making America a country of larger women.
It wasn’t long ago that many worried about teenage girls becoming anorexic or bulimic in an attempt to be thin. They literally starved themselves to 102 pounds or less, striving to look like cover girls, fashion models and movie stars. Now, prom and bridal gowns, sexy lingerie and even bikinis are being worn by plus size models.
Now there is a move to make fashion models more healthy and robust, Glamour Fashion tells us that plus size models (size 12 and up) are taking are taking the industry by storm with Ashley Graham in Sports Illustrated, Myla Dalbesio for Calvin Klein, an Denise Bidot for Target’s Lilly Pulitzer collection.
Designers and buyers are taking note, expanding their sizes, and choosing chic, on-trend styles for larger women.
