The 40th Toronto International Film Festival will host the world premiere of “Keith Richards: Under the Influence,” a Netflix Original production directed by Academy Award winner Morgan Neville (“Twenty Feet From Stardom”). The documentary is part of the inaugural Primetime program that was revealed Thursday by Festival organizers.
The film is rich with music and archival footage, drawing upon hours of new, intimate and reflective conversations with Richards. It tracks the evolution of his sound and shares the music that inspires him – electric blues, country honky-tonk, and southern soul – as he creates his first solo album in 23 years.
“If there’s a Mount Rushmore of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Keith’s face is surely on it. He has always represented the soul of rock music—for all of the light and dark shades that implies,” commented filmmaker Morgan Neville in a related Netflix press announcement. “To my relief, Keith Richards turned out to be a real man—full of humor, knowledge and wisdom. That’s the real Keith we’ve worked to capture in our film and I’m honored to bring it to a global audience via Netflix.”
First official news of the film came in July when Netflix announced it will be available to worldwide subscribers starting September 18, the same day that Richard’s solo album will be released.
“There’s no one who could bring this unprecedented look into the musical influences of Keith Richards to life as distinctively as Morgan Neville,” said Lisa Nishimura, Netflix VP of Original Documentary Programming. “Our viewers around the world are going to love the rare moments he has captured.”
The 40th Toronto International Film Festival runs September 10-20, 2015.
See you at the movies.
