The first Saturday of June is marked by the running of the Belmont Stakes and Major League Baseball. It’s rare to see an NFL team real busy this time of the year except for some offseason workouts. The Cleveland Browns bucked that trend on Saturday.
The Browns, coming off their second week of organized team activities, held a fan fest at the Cleveland Convention Center where over five thousand people were in attendance. While mingling with some of the best fans in the National Football League, the Browns found time to trade for a pro bowl punter as well.
The Browns acquired Andy Lee from the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a seventh round pick in the 2017 NFL draft. The Browns waived their punter from 2014 Spencer Lanning who you may remember was the guy who took a cleat to the helmet from Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown on opening day last season at Heinz Field.
The deal makes it a trifecta for the Browns kicking game in 2015. Cleveland will have not only a new punter, but a new kicker and long snapper as well. ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter was the first to report the deal for Lee via his twitter account.
Lee has been selected as an an all pro punter three times in his eleven year career. The 32 year old was sixth in the league in average yards per punt and ninth in punts inside the 20 yard line last season. Lee made the pro bowl after the 2007, 2009 and 2011 seasons. Lee was also the holder for current 49ers and former Browns kicker Phil Dawson.
Lanning spent the last two seasons as the Browns punter. Lanning was originally scheduled to appear at the Browns fan fest on Saturday, but did not show up once he was notified about his impending release.
Lanning handled the news like a professional and even took to his twitter account to thanks the Browns organization and fans.
“Been a hell of a ride,” Lanning tweeted. “Y’all deserve a championship, hate that I won’t be here to experience it. Can’t thank you enough for the memories!”
Lee became available when the 49ers selected Bradley Pinion, the former Clemson Tigers punter in the fifth round of this years NFL draft.
